However, general-purpose cloth adhesive tape should be selected according to the actual operating environment. It is not automatically equivalent to high-temperature Electrical Insulation Tape, fiberglass adhesive tape, polyimide adhesive tape, or specialized battery Insulation Materials. Its performance depends on the backing material, adhesive chemistry, thickness, coating structure, temperature exposure, surface condition, and required service life.

In particular, cloth adhesive tape has important limitations in lithium battery manufacturing. Its temperature resistance is generally limited to approximately 60–80°C for many general-purpose constructions, although specialized products may have different ratings. The adhesive may leave residue after prolonged bonding or exposure to heat. Some products have no flame-retardant performance, while others provide only basic flame resistance. Therefore, general-purpose cloth adhesive tape should not be treated as a primary electrical insulation material or as an internal structural fixing material for battery cells and battery PACK assemblies.


What Is Cloth Adhesive Tape?

Cloth adhesive tape is a flexible adhesive tape consisting of a fabric or textile backing coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. Many constructions also include a polyethylene or similar protective coating on the outer surface.

The fabric backing may be manufactured from polyester, cotton, rayon, or blended textile fibers. Polyester-backed cloth tape is often selected when higher dimensional stability and tensile performance are required, while cotton or cotton-blend backings can provide flexibility and conformability.

The adhesive layer can be based on natural rubber, synthetic rubber, hot melt adhesive, acrylic adhesive, or modified adhesive systems. The choice of adhesive strongly affects tack, peel adhesion, shear holding power, residue behavior, temperature resistance, aging performance, and compatibility with different surfaces.

Cloth Adhesive Tape in Lithium Battery and PACK Applications

Cloth adhesive tape may be used in selected external and temporary applications associated with lithium battery production and battery PACK assembly.

Typical applications can include external packaging reinforcement, temporary bundling, workbench marking, protective covering, and temporary fixation of transportation cushioning materials.

For example, cloth adhesive tape can be used to secure EPE or pearl cotton cushioning material inside an outer package during transportation.

It may also be used to bundle thick external BMS wire harness sections where the tape is not serving as the primary electrical insulation system.

The important distinction is between external auxiliary applications and internal battery insulation or structural applications.

General-purpose cloth adhesive tape is not normally selected as the primary insulation material around battery tabs, internal busbars, cell modules, or high-voltage areas.


Important Limitation for Battery Applications

Its temperature resistance is generally limited to 60–80°C for many general-purpose constructions, and the adhesive may leave residue. It may have no flame-retardant performance or only basic flame resistance.

It must not be used for internal bundling of battery cell modules, battery tab wrapping, or high-temperature areas.

For internal fixing applications, materials such as single-sided fiberglass adhesive tape, double-sided fiberglass adhesive tape, or PI polyimide adhesive tape should be selected according to the required mechanical, thermal, and electrical performance.

This distinction is especially important in lithium battery manufacturing because different locations within a battery assembly can have significantly different requirements.

An outer packaging operation may only require mechanical reinforcement.

A battery tab insulation application may require high dielectric strength, dimensional stability, electrolyte resistance, flame performance, and high-temperature stability.

Cloth Adhesive Tape Versus Fiberglass Adhesive Tape

Cloth adhesive tape and fiberglass adhesive tape both contain reinforcement, but they serve different purposes.

Cloth adhesive tape normally uses a textile backing based on polyester, cotton, or blended fibers. It emphasizes flexibility, general-purpose reinforcement, wrapping, packaging, and temporary fixing.

Fiberglass adhesive tape uses glass fiber reinforcement. Glass fibers provide much higher dimensional stability and tensile strength than many ordinary textile backings.

Temperature

Temperature is one of the most important factors affecting adhesive performance.

As temperature increases, many pressure-sensitive adhesives become softer. This can increase initial tack but may reduce shear holding power and increase the possibility of adhesive movement or residue.

At lower temperatures, some adhesives become harder and may show reduced tack.

Therefore, the temperature rating of a cloth adhesive tape should be evaluated based on both the backing and adhesive.

Surface Condition

Dust, oil, grease, moisture, and contamination can reduce adhesion.

A clean, dry, smooth surface generally provides better bonding conditions.

Dwell Time

General-purpose cloth adhesive tape is primarily designed for mechanical applications.

Although the backing may not conduct electricity, this does not automatically qualify the tape as an electrical insulation material.

Why Cloth Tape Is Not a Substitute for PI Tape

PI polyimide adhesive tape is specifically valued for high-temperature electrical insulation.

Polyimide film provides excellent dimensional stability and high-temperature capability.

In battery manufacturing, PI tape can be used for applications such as battery tab insulation, winding termination, high-voltage isolation, and high-temperature masking.

General-purpose cloth tape has a different design objective.

It prioritizes flexibility, mechanical reinforcement, easy application, packaging, and temporary fixing.

Therefore, replacing PI tape with cloth tape in a critical insulation application can create significant performance risks.


Why Cloth Tape Is Not a Substitute for Fiberglass Tape

Fiberglass adhesive tape uses glass fiber reinforcement.

Glass fibers provide excellent tensile strength and low elongation.

This makes fiberglass tape suitable for demanding bundling and reinforcement applications.
